If you are not familiar with the topic of staple fiber, we recommend checking out our guide ‘Staple Fiber: What You Should Know‘ first.

What Is Hollow Staple Fiber?

Hollow staple fiber is a type of staple fiber that has a hollow area in the middle of the strand. In other words, each strand of this fiber is not solid and has an empty space. Take a look at the following image; it shows what a strand of hollow fiber looks like:

This hollow area provides many advantages. The first and foremost is making the fiber lighter than other types of solid staple fibers. This feature is particularly useful when lightweight fibers are needed.

Specifications of Hollow Staple Fibers

When it comes to the world of staple fibers, there are four specifications that matter including raw material, denier grade, color and cut length. Hollow fibers are mostly made of polyester with different denier grades, cuts and colors, usually based on the customer’s order.

What is denier grade?

In the context of fibers, denier grade refers to the thickness of a strand. A higher thickness corresponds to a higher denier grade. This feature is measured by a special unit named Denier, represented by the letter ‘D’.

What is cut length?

Cut length refers to the length of a strand of staple fiber. This specification is not used for filament fibers, as they are continuous. Cut length is typically measured in millimeters.

What Is Siliconized Hollow Fiber?

Siliconized hollow fibers are made by adding silicone oil to the fibers during the manufacturing process. This oil helps make the fibers more durable, resilient, and softer. Additionally, it adds antibacterial and hypoallergenic features to the fibers.

Of course, silicone oil brings some disadvantages as well, such as making the fibers heat-sensitive and dirt-absorbent.

What Are Hollow Fibers Used for?

As mentioned, hollow staple fibers are significantly lighter compared to other solid fibers, as each strand has a hollow area inside. Therefore, when lightweight fibers are needed, they are a top priority. Industries such as bedding and garments are the primary customers for this type of staple fiber.
